Muki’s commitment to the Kenyan art scene spuns over 20 years.

His work utilizes the power of entertainment, in providing education on different key issues affecting Kenya’s youth. He graduated in Media Law from The London School Of Journalism (LSJ). Muki conducted interviews at The Hampshire College addressing various topics on East African Hiphop; including the historical context, the role of popular culture as a mode of expression and tool for public education and thepossibilities of using these avenues to address various community needs.

Muki co-founded with the British Council, Kenya -Words and Pictures, WAPI. This creative space saw his nomination for the 2006 award for British Council International Youth Entrepreneur of the Year IYMEY.

 

 More importantly Muki has been utilizing music as a tool for community empowerment. This is captured in Prof. Mwenda Ntaragwis book titled “East African Hiphop: Youth, culture and globolization”. His work engages a number of socially conscious projects, collaborating with institutions such as the Sarakasi Trust (Sawasawa Festival), French cultural centre (Jukwaani festival), Goethe institute and the British council.

Muki Garang’s efforts in promoting peace amongst Kenya’s youth, is noted worldwide through HipHop Parliament. He convened this program in the midst of the post-election violence 2007/2008 in Kenya, as a means to engage Nairobi’s youth in positive dialogue across ethnic lines. He is also one of the pioneers of Kenya’s youth station Ghetto Radio 89. 5fm and served them as an editor and artist liason.

Muki has received international attention from major media outlets including Reuters, CNN, BBC and The Independent. He now continues his work as the founder of Maisha Yetu – a non-profit organi- zation. This has seen him work in various capacities with intertantional acts such Black Uhuru (Jamaica), Baaba Maal (Mali) & Fally Ipupa (DRC) Muki is represented by mukigarang. media and retinamedia.
